AI Transparency Rules Now Part of Commercial Radio Code

The revised Commercial Radio Code of Practice 2026 has officially come into effect, bringing new safeguards for listeners and updated obligations for commercial radio broadcasters across Australia

What’s Changed?

AI Transparency – A Broadcasting First

The Code now requires stations to disclose when a synthetic voice is used to host a regularly scheduled program or news broadcast. This marks the first time provisions on the transparency of artificial intelligence have been included in an Australian broadcasting code of practice.

Protecting Younger Listeners 

Broadcasters must now take special care with content aired between 8am–9am and 3pm–4pm on school days, recognising these as peak listening times for children.

Strengthened News & Complaints Standards

The updated Code also strengthens provisions relating to corrections for errors in news coverage, as well as complaints reporting processes.

Updated Music Content Categories

Station categories used for Australian music content obligations have also been updated under the new Code.

Supporting Guidance for Broadcasters

Alongside the Code’s commencement, Commercial Radio & Audio has released updated commercial radio guidelines for content production. This includes new guidance to help licensees correctly identify and classify their station format under the Australian music obligations.

What This Means for Licensees

The ACMA expects all commercial radio licensees to comply with the new rules and will continue working closely with industry to support the Code’s implementation.
