Understanding Advertising Compliance for Cosmetic Injectables
With rising demand for cosmetic injectables like anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, the regulator is tightening scrutiny of cosmetic injectables promotion in Australia.
In 2024, the regulator took action to remove over 2,000 advertisements and blocked more than 150 websites promoting cosmetic injectables and dermal fillers so if you work in this space, understanding compliance is vital!
What You Can’t Say When Advertising Injectables
Australian law prohibits direct or indirect promotion of prescription-only products. This includes:
- Specific brand names such as Botox.
- Product names (e.g., “wrinkle-reducing injections,” “dermal fillers”).
- Nicknames (e.g., “tox,” “lip flicks,” “baby botox,” “brotox”).
- Hashtags using any service or product names/nicknames.
- Pricing for these treatments cannot be advertised
Who Must Comply with the Advertising Rules?
Beauticians, clinics, nurses, and advertisers promoting prescription cosmetic treatments in Australia must follow these strict advertising regulations.
In addition to the current requirements, new guidelines on the promotion and advertising of cosmetic injectable services will be introduced in September 2025.
